Enjoy the wonderful nature and medieval villages in the Auvergne
Vulcanic activity has given us these beautiful lakes. They appear all to be diverse. Some are for leisure, others only to visit and make fantastic pictures.
At about 12 km of our village you will find these two magnificent craters. One of them has a similarity with a moonlandscape. The tiny village in between has a lot of charm. This place is very popular with ramblers and for bicyclists as well as motorbikers.
According to many French, one of the most preserved villages from the medieval in France. Not only for its pitturesque architecture, but also the local products like Salers cheese and Salers biscuits are well known. The charcuterie from the Salers cows is as well worth while tasting! From Egliseneuve there is a most fabulous route to follow to Salers, which brings you over the Puy Mary mountain with mouthwatering views.
BesseAt 20 minutes from Egliseneuve, there is this typical village "Auvergnat". It has a medieval villagecenter with many tarraces where some local beers are offered to be tasted with the regional meals.
Le Mont Dore and La Bourboule
The magic of the thermal waters is a vivid feeling in the region of Auvergne. Here is the Bourboule, that is a thermal village par excellence owing its name to Borvo, Celtic god of the Sources. Built around the springs and following of the Dordona River, is located in the mountain mass of Sancy, well-known as the "station of the oxygen" due to the quality of its thermal waters and the purity of the air to breathe, it is the first pediatric thermal station of France. Thermal baths are to be found equally in Le Mont Dore. In both places you can find a classical style casino, a shopping area and restaurants de la belle époque with terraces. Both villages are to found at a 40 minutes drive from us.
Saint-NectaireNaturally well known for its famous cheese, the thermal village Saint-Nectaire has a beautiful architecture and one of the most beautiful churches in the countryside of France
Vallée de Chaudefour
At half an hour distance there is this wonderful valley to go to. It is a national preserved area and you have a fair chance of encountering animals in the wild.
Most lakes are preserved areas, so there is just nature to admire. But there are a few exceptions as Lac Pavin and Lac Chambon. Lac Chambon is ideal for a few days vacation. It has two extensive beaches, facilities for children, a boulevard with shops and restaurants and you can hire a canoe or a waterbike. Swimming is allowed at Lac Chambon. Fun guaranteed!
Very near to Lac Chambon is this wonderful castle to be found. In summer there are many events, like knight tournaments and other manifestations related to the Middle Ages.
Chateau de Val near Bort-les-Orgues
This magnificent château lies on a small island in a lake near to Bort-les-Orgues. at 45 minutes distance from Egliseneuve. Once they made here the famous film "The count of Monte Cristo" from the author Alexandre Dumas. Again the route through the mountains past some of the lakes, beautiful waterfalls and cataracts is a worthwhile effort to arrive to this fantastic site. Near the castle you will find a beach and a restaurant with terrace. There are sailing boats and waterbikes for rent and if you wish you can make a boat tour on the lake with a guide.
At 15 minutes from Egliseneuve, there is the pitturesque Lac Pavin where you can relax, hire a rowing boat or waterbike. There is a beach and a restaurant with terrace. You can also choose to follow the path around this romantic lake and take some fabulous pictures.
In the immediate surroundings of Egliseneuve there are even more beautiful volcanic lakes, mountains and forests to be seen. Our nature has a lot to offer. Most of them are not open for relaxation, just enjoy the beautiful and peaceful sites. It is there to be discoevered by you wandering along. The region is most interesting for ornitologists, entomologists and botanists. To name a few lakes: Lac Chauvet, Lac des Lastioules, Lac d'Esclauze, Lac La Landie (fishing allowed!) All within 10 to 15 kms.
Naturally Egliseneuve has also a few things to offer. Take a stroll out to our two beautiful waterfalls at 1, 5 km. There is also our Roman church, certainly worthwhile to pay a visit to. In the village centre you will find La Maison des Fromages where you can taste all five appellations of the famous cheeses of our region and wach a educative film about the process of cheesemaking. There is an Office du Tourisme and last but not least, why not take an afternoon to go fishing some trout!
